What is GPA?

GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a standardized method of measuring academic achievement in many educational institutions, particularly in the United States. It's a numerical representation of your average grade across all your courses. A GPA is calculated by taking the total number of grade points a student has earned and dividing it by the total number of credit hours they have taken. This provides a single, easy-to-understand metric of a student's overall performance, which is often used for scholarships, honors, and admission to higher education programs.

How to Use This Calculator

This calculator is designed to be simple and quick. For each course you've taken in a semester, you need to provide two pieces of information. First, enter the number of 'Credits' (or credit hours) the course is worth. Second, select the letter 'Grade' you received for that course from the dropdown menu. If you've taken more than one course, simply click the "Add Course" button to create more rows. Once you have entered all your courses for the term, click "Calculate GPA", and the tool will instantly display your GPA for that semester.

How GPA is Calculated

This calculator uses a standard 4.0 grading scale, which is common in many universities. The calculation follows a clear formula:

GPA = (Sum of [Credit Hours × Grade Points]) / Total Credit Hours

Each letter grade is assigned a specific point value (e.g., A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0). The calculator first multiplies the grade points for each course by the number of credits for that course. It then sums up these values for all the courses you've entered and divides this total by the total number of credits you've taken. This gives you your weighted Grade Point Average.
