What is Ovulation?

Ovulation is the process in the female menstrual cycle where a mature ovarian follicle ruptures and releases an egg. This is the most fertile period of the cycle. For conception to occur, the egg must be fertilized by sperm within about 12 to 24 hours of its release. Since sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, the "fertile window" includes the days leading up to ovulation as well as the day of ovulation itself. This calculator helps you estimate this crucial time frame.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator provides an estimated ovulation date and fertile window using the calendar-based method. This method assumes that ovulation occurs about 14 days before the start of your next menstrual period. To use it, you need to provide two key pieces of information: the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) and your average cycle length. Based on this, the calculator projects the start date of your next period and then counts back 14 days to estimate your ovulation date. The fertile window is then calculated as the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself.
